ABSTRACT
In Nigeria where the cost of imported goods rises astronomically in accordance with the foreign exchange rates, the need to fabricate this very important machine became of important necessity.
In this project title design and fabrication of an electric arc welding machine was fabricated using locally available material source, it was designed to serve with an input voltage of 220-240v and an output voltage of 55v. The primary side through which voltage is supplied to machine has 280 turns with equivalent standard wire gauge (SWG) of 15 copper coils and the secondary side which is connected to the output terminal has 70 turns with an equivalent standard wire gauge of 8 copper coils. The major component used was the Transformer, other component included was cooling fan, the housing/casing , welding cables, welding tong, welding earth clamp, switch and welding machine handle.
The machine uses a shell type transformer and was mounted on the rectangular metal frame (housing/casing ) of galvanized plate (1.44mm) and enclose by a case which has perforation on it side for cross ventilation and cooling to avoid over heating of the machine, the transformer was mounted on the casing bed with bolt and nut. A cooling fan was attached to the interior rear part of the casing for cooling the transformer while working.
At the end of all, the machine was fabricated successfully, the primary terminals were connected to the main sources, the secondary terminal where connected to the output (welding tong and earth clamp), the machine was tested by using an electrode to strike an arc and its performance was satisfactory in the metal work were all successfully joined using the machine, the machine has a power rating of 1KVA and a work 76% efficiency.
