ABSTRACT
Security and Hygiene plays an important role our society and there are adequate needs for security systems and simple hygienic practices. There are problems encountered in the security sector as well as poor hygiene in our society. Some of these problems include lack of controlled access to certain facilities which are out of bonds to unauthorized and little observation of common hygienic practices like proper hand sanitization before accessing public areas, which might lead to illness and contraction of diseases to those involved.
In a bid to solve this problem of security; controlled access and proper hygienic practice, this project has aimed at upgrading the access control system and making hygienic routine a necessity, hence the design and fabrication of an Automatic pedestrian access control system fitted with an automatic hand sanitizer dispensing station which subjects a user trying to access a designated building to hygienic practice like the application of the hand sanitizer gel before the user is allowed present a valid means of identification to the system. The process of granting access to the user after hygienic procedure is determined by the access system which makes use of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) lock system. The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) lock system has a card reader that detects and grants access only when authorized key cards is used. In essence, it is a system that ensures that the use of hand sanitizers before access is granted to individuals with authentic means of identification. The system makes use of passive key card and the advantage of using this type of RFID key card is that it operates without a battery.
The system functions in real-time due to the fact that a user carries out simple hygienic practice when he/she sanitizes his/her hand afterwards access is granted when an authorized key card is reader by the access control system. The system is also equipped with a battery which serves as backup source of power when there is an outage of power supply.
