ABSTRACT
This project entails the designed and fabrication of a single-plate metal polishing machine which is very functional in the investigation of the properties of metals.This project was undertaken so as to produce a very simple, affordable and durable apparatus that can be effectively used in laboratories and workshops in Nigerian higher institutions and can be used as alternatives to the high-cost imported polishing machines being used currently. The machine is designed to use motor-powered grinding wheels to be rotated against a marked-out area of sample metal piece to be polished and thenetched for metallographic purposes. Water is used for flushing the polished area of the metal to ensure that the surface is smooth and that it retains the original micro structural composition inherent in the sample. Nitric acid and ethanol (Nitasolution) isused for the etching process. The wheels are made of abrasive materials bonded together with the right bonding agent and provision is made for the insertion and removal of the wheels from the motor spindle for maintenance as well as to give room for different wheel types with soft and hard grinding abrasive to suite the kind of material. A tank is incorporated for the flow of liquid needed for the process. This locally fabricated machine will be very handy and useful in the process of etching different metal for various experimental applications and analysis
