ABSTRACT
Nigeria, a nation rich in natural resources, boasts a vast network of rivers vital to its economy and ecology. The Niger and Benue rivers, along with their tributaries, form the backbone of this aquatic system. However, despite Nigeria's abundant water resources, challenges persist in ensuring their proper and sustainable management. One significant issue is the lack of accurate bathymetric data for many rivers, hindering their effective utilization for commercial and economic activities. To address this gap, this project developed a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) specifically designed for precise river depth measurements. The ROV's design incorporated advanced features, including a sonar sensor, to accurately collect bathymetric data. Rigorous testing and calibration were conducted to ensure the ROV's reliability and accuracy. The developed ROV successfully demonstrated its ability to navigate challenging riverine environments and collect high-quality depth data. This information is crucial for improving river management, navigation, flood control, and environmental protection in Nigeria. The successful implementation of this ROV technology provides a valuable tool for addressing the challenges associated with limited bathymetric data in Nigerian rivers. By enabling accurate depth measurements, this project contributes to sustainable river management and supports the country's economic development.
