ABSTRACT

This project deals with the bending of sheet metal by the incorporation of a hydraulic mechanism being operated by an electric motor. The aim of which is to eliminate the limitations of the manual bending machine and provide an alternative to an already existing machine by addition of a hydraulic and motor system to automate the bending without the need for the industry to do away with the old working model. The design in this project work is such that the amount of personnel and effort needed to operate and bend sheet metals is reduced by a simple method of a hydraulic jack cylinder arm being driven by an electric motor to provide the force needed to bend the sheet metals over a clamped beam. In this project, utilizing a practicable 70W electric motor, bending can be achieved on sheet metals up to 6mm theoretically and this was at very slow speed when tested practically. We were able to calculate that choosing a higher rated motor with a balance in speed and torque of 3.46KW is sufficient for an optimum bending process in about 60 seconds
