ABSTRACT
The produced water that is extracted from the reservoir along with the oil frequently contains contaminants that are bad for the environment and people. Different treatments have been used in treating produced water before disposal to the environment due to its adverse effect. In this study, biodegradation of hydrocarbons in untreated produced water from Ijaw oil field in Delta State were observed over a period of time in a continuous Stirred Tank Bioreactor using pure microbes’ cultures. Experiments were performed in 1L fabricated laboratory scale continuous stirred tank bioreactor. The extent at which reduction of petroleum hydrocarbon fractions, were monitored by means of UV-visible spectrophotometer.
