ABSTRACT

Open road drainage systems are essential for the effective management of stormwater runoff and to prevent flooding. However, over time, these systems become clogged with silt and debris, reducing their efficiency and increasing the risk of flooding. Manual desilting of open road drainage systems is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. This project aims to design and fabricate a desilting machine for open road drainage to reduce the time and cost of manual desilting and improve the efficiency of open road drainage systems. The desilting machine was designed using a combination of mechanical and fluid systems based on the working principle of the venturi effect. The machine was housed in a four-wheeled steel frame and designed to suck silt and debris from the drainage channel using a venturi pipe system. The silt and debris were then transported to a filtration tank via pipes. The machine was fabricated using locally available materials, including mild steel plates, steel angle bars, pipes, and hydraulic components. The fabrication process was carried out in a mechanical workshop, and the machine was assembled and tested.
