ABSTRACT

In many rural communities across Nigeria, limited access to the national grid poses a significant challenge for mobile phone charging. This paper describes the design and construction of a mobile solar charger specifically aimed at addressing this need. As a clean and renewable energy source, the solar mobile charger offers a practical solution for these communities, empowering them to charge their phones without relying on traditional grid-based methods. This project details the methodology behind designing and building the portable solar phone charger. Following a selection process that considered factors like efficiency and power output, the project incorporates a solar panel, Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) for optimized power extraction, battery, and a synchronous buck converter to efficiently convert solar energy into a format suitable for mobile phone charging. To ensure safe operation and portability, a prototype mobile enclosure was fabricated using iron angle bars and iron sheets. The fabrication process involved cutting and welding the necessary components together. This project encompasses both the design of the charging circuit, featuring the MPPT converter system, and the construction of the mobile enclosure for easy transportation. Notably, the charger is capable of simultaneously charging twenty phones, making it a powerful solution for communities with a high demand for mobile phone charging.
