ABSTRACT
The existing pumps designs are basically the same in the mode of operation with slight variations in the materials of construction. The pumps are operated by the up and down movement of the handle.
The major problems associated with these pumps are high level of fatigue and low pump efficiency. These problems have motivated the design and fabrication of a manually operated hand pump that employs a gear drive in the power train to ease the operation and at the same time increase the pump efficiency. From the test results, it follows that for the same input speed and the static water level same interval of time the pump with gear drive discharges more water than that without gear drive. This show more ease of operation of the pump and pump efficiency.
