ABSTRACT

Car batteries loose stored energy and they can be recharged by using a battery charger to restore the lost energy. One of the limitations most automobile drivers face when charging batteries is the inability of the battery chargers to charge more than one battery at a time. Thus the Objective of this paper is to design and construct simple car battery charger that is capable of charging up to six 12v lead-acid batteries when connected in series at a time. The design and construction of this car battery charger has solved the problem most automobile drivers face. This device consist of a 72 voltage step down transformer which steps down the mains voltage to the voltage of the transformer, a rectifier which convert alternating current to a direct current and an ammeter which indicate the current level and charging state of the battery charger. The ammeter shows it reading from 60amps to 0amps indicating that it is fully charged. A digital multimeter is used as the test tool and the result gotten from the operational testing of the batteries were satisfactory. Adequate care have been taken in the design and construction to ensure that the battery charger is both reliable and easy to use.
