ABSTRACT
The purpose of this project is to design and construct a 24Vdc solar charge controller using Pulse Width Modulation technique. The charge controller is designed and constructed to control a 200AH battery bank charging process.
An extensive literature review was carried out preceding the design and construction of the PWM solar charge controller. The construction process made use of A Single Ended Primary Inductor Converter (SEPIC) DC-to-DC converter and an Allegro ACS712 current sensor. An Arduino Uno board was the microprocessor utilised. The charge controller was used in charging a battery within a simple solar powered system.
The PWM charge controller designed using a SEPIC DC-to-DC converter was used to satisfactorily charge a discharged 24V battery bank from a bulk charge to float charge stage within 6 hours. Remote access to charge controller data such as charging voltage, charging current and battery percentage is made available.
