ABSTRACT

As technology improves, it has slowly and efficiently been embedded into every part of life. With the advent of communication protocols, organizations have turned to building gadgets that can interact with one other over communication protocols. Hence, the aim of this work is to design and construct an Internet of Things smart switch with a temperature sensor. This has extended into the homes and how we can use these communication protocols to build a smart home where appliances and energy consumption can be controlled remotely. This project focuses on using a GSM module and a website to build an IoT based smart switch with temperature sensor to remotely control home appliances. Research for the right components for the project was carried out. The website was built and hosted. The microcontroller used was PIC4… being powered by a linear power supply which also powers other components in the smart switch. The interface through which the user can communicate with the smart switch is a website. The GSM module aids communication between the website and the smart switch, conveying the desired information between the both of them. The environment’s temperature sensed by the temperature sensor is displayed on the LCD and the temperature can be controlled from the website. The appliances connected to the smart switch can be controlled using the website’s interface and the state of the appliances can be tracked on the website.
