ABSTRACT
Heterocyclic compounds having two nitrogen atoms in the ring exhibit interesting biological activities. Metronidazole, a core structure of many bioactive compounds like flagyl, possess an affinity to bind with most biological targets. This study is on the synthesis of metronidazole derivatives. Compound A was synthesized by refluxing thionyl chloride with metronidazole and the resulting product coupled with 2 molecules of aniline to obtain 1Nethyl aniline -2-thioacylaniline-5-nitroimidazole (Compound B). Thin layer chromatography was used to monitor the reaction and to determine the Rf of the synthesized compound. The compound prepared showed a single spot on the chromatographic plate with Rf (0.70).
