ABSTRACT
The justice system in Nigeria is slow and the delay litigants encounter in the process often times get them discouraged from pursuing their case. Justice delayed is justice denied as delay in the trial of cases, especially criminal cases, can lead to instances where a suspect has been detained for years before being declared innocent, thus violating his right to fair hearing within a reasonable time. This research work is aimed at achieving a justice system that is efficient and effective with minimal occurrence of delay so that members of the Nigerian society will be encouraged and have trust in the justice system. There are several approaches that can be employed for trials being to be done in a within a timely manner. This research work further points out areas where the various organs of government can put in efforts to forward the cause of justice in Nigeria. It also points where stakeholders of the justice system can be faulted in performing their duty to ensure for an effective justice system. This research work is partly doctrinal, and partly empirical, and relies on journals, newspapers, interviews, statutes and cases as sources of information. This research work is done with the aim of contributing to the existing knowledge on this aspect of our legal system. Delay in the administration of the justice system in Nigeria is not a new occurrence, but it's impacts in the lives of Nigerians is ever fresh 17 with the issue remaining unresolved.
