ABSTRACT
Anchomanes difformis has been said to have therapeutic values ranging from gastro-protective, anti-trypanosomal, anti-microbial, anti-plasmodial and anti-cancer properties. However some studies report that it has high toxicity.The aim of this research was to determine the cytotoxic analysis and genotoxic effects of ethanol leaf extract of A.difformis using Alium cepa assay. During the course of this research, ethanol leaf extracts of A. difformis were exposed to meristematic root cells of Allium cepa at various concentrations; 0.001mg/ml, 0.002mg/ml, 0.003mg/ml, 0.004mg/ml and 0.005mg/ml. Findings from the study showed reduced root length of the test plant (Allium cepa) as the concentrations increased; 0.001mg/ml was 2.14±0.05cm, 0.004 mg ml(0.81±0.02 cm) and 0.005mg/ml (0.74±0.02cm) compared to that of control which was 3.75±0.06 cm. Aberrations such as c-mitosis, vagrant chromosomes, laggard, polar deviation and bridges were also observed in the chromosomes of the test plant Allium cepa. The rate of aberration increased as the concentrations of ethanol leaf extract of A.difformisincreased. The effects of A. difformis extract on the root meristem cells of Allium cepa are an indication of the likelihood of a similar if not the same effects on humans.
