ABSTRACT

Cytological and morphological studies were carried out on some species of Orchidaceae. (B. calyptratum Kreanzl., B. porphyrostachys Summerhayes Polystachya concreta, Hook and Polystachya masayensis, Hook). All the species used were collected from various part of the country and planted at the departmental garden. The following was carried out, cytological analysis including mitosis, meiosis studies revealed that the chromosome number of the four species could not be correctly confirmed. Meiosis was normal in all species and they exhibited regular bivalent pairing. Pollen fertility of Polystachya concreta was high. The result from epidermal morphology reveals that the four species were hypostomatic with their mature anomocytic stomata, with the stomatal size of highest with B. calyptratum 36µm x 20µm x 18µm x 16µm and the least was in B. porphyrostachys 30µm x 24µm x 20µm x 10µm
