ABSTRACT

The focus of this study aims at providing evidence for the view the CV-tier is a component of syllable representation. The language used in this study is Esan which a proto-North Central Edoid language spoken in five local government areas of Edo State. The theoretical framework used is based on the model propounded by Clements and Keyser (1983) expounding a CV model specially designed to deal with the syllable. The data used in this study is a word list that consists of two hundred lexical items translated into Esan from English language; selected items out of the word list are analyzed to show the availability and applicability of the theory to Esan. Findings reveal that the theory operates in Esan, however there are exceptions and certain items undergo some phonological processes for such exceptions.
