Summary
This study focused on culture and empowerment Iruekpen community of Edo State, which made the research focus on the role of culture on women empowerment , challenges facing women empowerment and factors that reduces or enhance women power.
The theoretical frame model used to further explain the thrust of this study was the Ecological Feminism and Structural Functionalist Theory. This study was conducted among 36 respondents who were selected randomly in different wards in Iruekpen community Edo state, Data was collected with the aid of an in-depth interview guide.
The finding of this study established that there are a lot of cultural restrictions that limit women empowerment. This ranges from land ownership, inheritance, decision making e.t.c.
Also according to the findings of the study, there are lot of challenges facing women empowerment. Base on the above responses, majority of the respondent stated that they are being relegated to the background and they have little or no access to land or loans.
Finally the finding of this study established that The findings stated that women in Irukekpen community are not allow to partake in meetings and they play limited role in the day to day administration of the community. Although majority of the respondent said that women are only allow to partake in meetings relating to women alone and this leverage does not occur every time.
