ABSTRACT

This research examines the significance of dance in African culture. To achieve this aim, "Mmonwu Dance" of the Isuofia people of Anambra state was used as a case study. Mmonwu dance is performed by the people of Isuofia in Anambra State at both sacred and secular ceremonies. Primary and secondary research methodologies were used to gather necessary data. This consists of consultation of relevant literature such as books, journals, magazines and archival materials. Interviews were conducted and the performance was observed to enhance knowledge gotten from literature. The research concludes that dance indeed is significant to the culture of a people through its movements, instrumentation, costume, props, and the general aesthetics of the performance. The cultural significance of Mmọnwụ dance lies in it's ability to teach the history of the people, its belief system, serve as avenue for enculturation and social cohesion.
