ABSTRACT

Costume is a style of dress, including garments, accessories, and hairstyles, especially those worn by actors in a theatrical performance or people in a festival or carnival situation, while festivals is a special event organised by a local community  which brings together people from all walks of life. The purpose of this study is to look into  the cultural significance of costume and make-up in Afiaolu festival of Nnewi people of Anambra state. To achieve this goal the introductory chapter, gives a general understanding of festivals, followed by the purpose of study, problems, significance, scope, and limitation of study. The researcher reviews relevant literature into the origin, definitions and functions of costume, the origin of the people and their festival as well as the methodology for carrying out this research work. This paper concludes that costumes and make-up play a significant role in identifying symbolisms in Afiaolu festival of Nnewi people.
