ABSTRACT
Infertility is the inability of those of reproductive age to become or remain pregnant. The study was conducted to assess the cultural perception towards the causes of infertility among indigenes in selected communities of Egor local Government Area. The objectives of the study were to elicit the knowledge of indigenes of Egor Local Government Area about infertility, to assess their cultural perception towards the causes of infertility. A descriptive survey was used for the study. The subjects of the study consisted of two hundred and fifty seven men and woman in Egor LGA. A well-structured 257 questionnaires was administered and retrieved. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Chi-square was used to test for relationship between the knowledge and cultural perception on causes of infertility among indigenes of Egor LGA. The study showed that 25.7% of the respondents exhibiting correct knowledge of the cause of infertility in comparison with the McDonald’s scale indicates a low level of knowledge regarding the cause of infertility. Therefore, the respondents can be said to have a low level knowledge of the causes of infertility. The grand mean of the respondents’ responses was computed as 2.44 which is below the decision point of 3.00, thus indicating a negative cultural perception of the causes of infertility. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between the knowledge and perception towards the causes of infertility in Egor LGA. There should be formation of support groups and participation of those affected to help in resisting negative feeling associated with the condition, correct misconceptions and give appropriate advice to couples.
