ABSTRACT
The act of Cross dressing is about a person dressed in a certain way and manner not traditionally associated with one’s sex. It also reflects a behavioural pattern of the cross dresser without attributing or implying any specific causes for such behaviours. In today’s world, it is often assumed that the connotation of cross dressing is directly correlated or represents male who wears female clothing and chooses to express themselves as such. Due to the impact of social media in modern day Nigeria, cross dressing is gradually becoming popular as many celebrities cross dress. Despite this new wave of dressing pushing its way through ethnic and religious barriers, majority of the public still fight and resist the art of cross dressing and ultimately demonizes the cross dressers. Some goes as far as ostracizing cross dressers from their families, because they are tagged as societal miss-fit, whose behaviour is capable of bringing shame and disgrace. This notion about cross dressing needs to be corrected. As a result, this study adopted the combination of both the historical and literary Methodologies of research to get historical records of cross dressing and how it finally navigated it’s way into Nigeria fashion space. It also revealed the lopsided role of religious and ethnic sentiment towards cross dressers and the governmental policy formation that tends to cripple the activities of a Cross-dresser. From this research findings, it was revealed that due to a stereotypical and narrow perspective towards cross dressing, a vast majority of the older generation, religious and societal leaders have vehemently refused to see the prospect it can have on the Nigeria fashion industry and the economy at large. It is the opinion of this researcher that cross dressing is a creative and harmless way of self-express, it is recommended by this researcher that, if truly annex and generally accepted, there are economic prospect and social-cultural integration as dividends and benefits. It is hoped that the final outcome will change the negative narrative about cross dressing in the Nigeria fashion space and encourage more daring designers to venture into creating cross dresses.
