ABSTRACT
Group leaders are individuals saddled with the responsibilities of leadership in group or a social system. Taking into cognizance, therefore, the importance of the roles which group leaders are expected to play towards the development of their communities. This study examined, generally, the credibility of group leaders in community development activities in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Edo state. The specific objectives were to; describe the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, identify common group leaders in the community development activities and examine the role they play, ascertain the perception of the respondents on the credibility of their group leaders, and identify the perceived constraint factors to group leaders’ credibility in community development efforts. A two stage sampling technique was employed in this study. Data for this study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were obtained through the use of structured questionnaire administered through interview schedule to one hundred (120) randomly selected respondents from the study area. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson product moment correlation. Results from the descriptive statistic showed that majority (59.2%) of the respondents was male, and majority (86.7%) was married. The mean age, mean household size and mean average monthly income were 44 years, 5 members and N69,060.6 respectively. The result showed that only 17.3% of the respondents had no formal education while majority (82.7%) had undergone formal education. Furthermore, the mean number of years lived by the respondents in the area was 15 years and majority (44.9) of the respondents were farmers. The result further showed majority (60.2%) had interest in the development of the community and majority (58.2%) attend community meetings and make contributions. Also, majority (72.4%) of the respondents identified roads construction as the major development activity carried out in the community. Religious group was identified by majority (62.2%) of the respondents as the major community group in the community. Finding solution to community issues with mean of 3.51 ranked the most favorable perceived credibility quality of a group leader. Majority (88.8%) of the respondents identified lack of funds as the major constraint to the achievement of results by community group leaders. Results of Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation showed significant relationship between selected socioeconomic characteristics of respondents and the perceived credibility of group leaders at either 1% or 5% level of probability.
