Abstract
This study aimed at examining counselling intervention on the prevention of premarital sex among undergraduate students. Four research questions were raised to guide the study.
The design adopted for this study is the survey research design. The sample consisted of 130 Guidance and Counselling students. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from the respondents. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two experts in the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counselling psychology. The test re-test method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher herself. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
Findings revealed that there is a significant influence between individual counselling and pre-marital sex among undergraduates’ students in the University of Benin. It was also revealed that there is a significant influence between group counselling and pre-marital sex among undergraduates students in the University of Benin. Based on the findings, it was recommended that family counsellors should intensify efforts at the propagation and re-orientation of moral values. It was also recommended that Community leaders should use the family communication approach to addressing pre-marital sex among in-school female students.
