ABSTRACT
Costume is a cultural product and its significance transcends the aesthetic roles it plays in theatre productions. This study investigated the role costume plays as a means of identification in the Ozo chieftaincy induction ceremony of the Enugwu Aguleri people of Anambra State, Nigeria. The study deployed the qualitative method of research for its data gathering and analysis. This entailed a description and detailed analysis of the Ozo chieftaincy costume, vis a vis its significance as an identification symbol and aesthetic element of the induction ceremony. Results showed that the overall significance of costume in the Ozo induction ceremony include enhancing the identity of the wearer as a distinguished chief of the community, among other things. The study recommended among other things that the academic community should do more to enhance public perception of costume as having qualities beyond mere artistic and aesthetic features, but also a viable tool for cultural interpretation and this consciousness will aid them eventually in noting the sacredness associated with their culture.
