ABSTRACT

This research examines the effects of corruption on sustainable economic development in Nigeria. At the outset, it was discovered that corruption is endemic in Nigeria. The nation’s socio-economic and political landscape is replaced with the malaise, and has been a factor that has constantly disabled the quest for economic development. The diversion of the resources of the state by corrupt officials was a symptom of an amoral public that did not see it fit to protect the state’s resources. Excessive corruption led to the strangulation of the nation’s economy. Certain attempts were made to tackle the menace. The establishment of anti-graft bodies has brought only limited gains. This was due to the fact that the overarching central political authorities often lack the political will to confront corruption. The research submits that if the Nigerian State is to defeat corruption, then the federal government must master the political will to tackle the ugly monster. It was suggested that corrupt officials should be prosecuted irrespective of religion, tribe or party affiliation. Good government/governance was considered essential if we are to have accountability and transparency. A good legal system, an equitable income distribution mechanism and anti-graft agencies that are insulated from the corrupting influence of politics were all considered importance in the fight against corruption.
