ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to study the rate of corrosion of mild steel in different concentrations of an acid. The corrosion study of mild steel is carried out using different methods. But for the purpose of this study, the weight loss methods were used. Mild steel coupons of similar sizes were immersed in different concentrations of Hydrochloric acid and their weight loss measured over a period of 5 days. The weight loss is used to calculate the corrosion rate which is given by:
Cr= kw/dat
Where k is the constant for unit conversion
w is the weight loss in grams
d is the density of mild steel in g/cm3
a is the area of mild steel coupons in cm2
t is the time in hours
The results show that corrosion of mild steel does occur in acidic medium, and that the rate of corrosion increases with increasing concentration.
