Summary
The study examined “Corporate governance and financial performance in Nigeria. The broad objective of this study is to determine the extent to which corporate governance can enhance financial performance in the banking industry in Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: determine the extent to which having a competent board of directors can enhance financial performance in the Nigerian banking industry; ascertain the extent to which having a competent management team can enhance financial performance in the Nigerian banking industry; find out the extent to which the enforcement of risk management requirements and best practices by regulatory authorities can enhance financial performance in the Nigerian banking industry; and determine the extent to strict compliance with laid-down internal control and operation can enhance financial performance in the Nigerian banking industry.
The cross sectional survey research design was adopted and the population of the study consisted of all the employees of Zenith bank, Eco bank, Unity bank, and Stanbic IBTC Bank
all in Benin City. Stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting the sample; staff status formed the basis of stratification while randomization was on the basis of lottery. Research data were analysed using multiple regression model.
