ABSTRACT
The Nigerian music industry is one of the most vibrant and fastest growing music scenes in the world. The Nigerian music industry has evolved in many ways over the years; absorbing western influences and inculcating traditional genres to give it a rich blend of culture and modernity. Even more, the Nigeria music industry is a major contributor to the country’s economy. According to the Premium Times, the industry generates over $2 billion in revenue per year. This development in the music industry, coupled with the ever increasing presence of technology in the music scene, has given rise to intricate legal and regulatory issues. A major issue in the music industry, and one which forms the core of this research, is the question of copyright infringement of musical works. To be more specific, this work focuses on situations where one song purportedly copies the lyrics or chord patterns of an earlier song. To put it even more simply, this research deals with instances where a song has been sampled without permission. And recommends a guide for determining when infringement occurs.
