ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the coping strategies and quality of life of family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia attending Uselu Neuropsychiatric facility, Benin City. The study adopted a descriptive survey design using convenience sampling technique. It sampled Two Hundred and Twenty-two (222) family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia attending the health facility. A well-structured questionnaire was used as instruments of data collection. The data analysis for the objectives as well as the research hypothesis was carried out using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28.0 for windows. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. The result shows that majority of the women have fair level of knowledge of schizophrenia with poor quality. It also shows that majority of the family caregivers employ emotional supports by talking to someone about how they were feeling. The study therefore recommends that government and health-care system should pay more attention to the specific needs of family caregivers by supporting caregivers and their family members financially, improving insurance coverage regarding the cost of psychiatric medicine and hospitalization, providing suitable and standard therapeutic spaces as well as enough and trained specialist and staff in psychiatric wards.
