ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to characterize and analyze the combustion characteristics of a typical Nigerian lignite coal. The experiment was carried out in a Thermogravimetric and the effect of coal charring temperature on the carbon conversion rate, the relative effect and order of magnitude of operation variables such as composition (oxygen) temperature, pressure and initial particle size on the conversion rate of carbon and also the effect of combustion on the particle size. In this study, a Nigerian lignite coal was selected in other to explore the energy potentials. To achieve this, the coal sample was characterized by the conventional method (Proximate and Ultimate) of analysis. The coal was further subjected to heat treatment at different temperatures. The chats obtained at different temperatures were also fully characterized. The result obtained shows that the lignite coal has a high carbon content and a gross calorific value revealing that the Nigerian coal has great energy potential and as such should be exploited and explored.
