CONTRIBUTION OF YOUTH ORGANIZATION TO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

 

This study seeks to assess the contribution of youth organization in community development in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The specific objectives of the study were toexamine respondents socio-economic characteristics; identify the different types of youth groups and their roles in their community development efforts; ascertain respondents strategies to improve their effective participation in their community development efforts and examine the constraints to their effective participation in rural community development efforts.

Taro Yamane’s sample size formula was used to sample a total of 100 respondents from a population of 134 identified members of youth groups in the study area with the use of structured questionnaire. 97 questionnaires were retrieved. Data collected were analyzed using frequency table, percentage and mean score analysis

Results showed that majority (63.9%) of the respondents were male, single (76.3%) with mean age of 23 approximately. Lack of incentives (Mean = 3.17), lack of amenities (Mean = 3.94), migration to urban areas (Mean = 3.64), lack of technical skills to offer (Mean = 3.33), poverty (Mean = 3.87), poor leadership among youth organization (Mean = 2.69) and mismanagement of funds by leaders (Mean = 3.51) were the basic constraints militating against the youth clubs participation in community based organizations. Age and household size of the respondents correlated with the participation in community-based organization in the study area. The findings therefore, recommends the use of matured youth and those with higher household size in order to be stakeholders in community development to record better achievement.
