ABSTRACT
This work discusses the contrastive analysis of Igbo and Yoruba phonological systems, using comparative linguistics as a theoretical framework. It investigates the sound and tonal systems of the languages under study, pointing out the relationships between Igbo and Yoruba languages based on their phonological systems.
These relationships and contrasts will cover the structure of the sounds. That is, the number of consonant and vowel sounds including nasal consonants and nasal vowels as well as the relationship and contrast in the phonological and phonetic realisation and description of the sounds in the two languages. Also, this work will study the significance of tones in both languages and how they are patterned in the two languages which are said to have historically originated from kwa language family. This research is divided into five sections. They are (a). Introduction (b). Literature review. (c). Sound systems of Igbo and Yoruba phonological system (d). Comparison of Igbo and Yoruba phonological system. (e) findings and conclusion.
