ABSTRACT
The widows of Umuhu-Nvosi are faced with long term widowhood traditions that are dehumanizing and barbaric to women living in the community. These practices is borne out of the patriarchal nature of the Umuhu-Nvosi community where male are seen as superior to the female living in the society. The women are made to pass through these widowhood rites in order to honor the memories of their late husband and also to cut off any form of ties with the deceased. However contrary to these rites, the male are not subjected to any of these dehumanizing rites. Based on the result of this findings, it has been observed that the coming of Christianity has led to a lot of changes in widowhood practice in the community especially among Christian widows. The church has helped in fighting against the rituals of drinking the water of the corpse of the late husband, the period of mourning and also in changing the mourning from black which denotes evil or fetish practice to white which symbolizes purity.
