ABSTRACT
This research effort examines the aesthetics qualities of proverbs in Edo. It hopes to explore the beauty of Edo culture through its proverbs. Proverbs are treasured saying that convey the demonstrated wisdom of the ages and therefore serve as a reliable authority in argument or discussion. Also, proverbs are popular saying that provides nuggets of wisdom. They give advice and express truth. The study is aimed at determining the usage of Edo proverbs and its interpretation and contextual usage. The primary method of data collection was the discourse mode (face-to-face) of data collection from competent native speaker of Edo. The researcher also employed the use of published and unpublished materials to complement its primary methods of data collection. The theory of contextual analysis and Uwajeh’s translation model was employed as the Theoretical Framework. A total number of Thirty-five(35) proverbs were collected and analyzed. The researcher revealed that proverb is a very rich part of the Edo culture, used in uplifting and inspiring. It is also used to unify people around the world.
