ABSTRACT
This research work is a study on proverbs on Esan language, the essence of this research is to outline how proverbs are perceived by the Esan people and how these proverbs are used in the day to day life of the Esan people.
This work discussed some parables used in Esan land at different occasions like marriages, settling of dispute, burials and other traditional occasions. In this research it is discovered that most set of people in Esan land that use parables are the Elders of the Esan communities and parents sometimes use parables to advise their children so that they won’t go astray in life. The findings of this work are useful to both the native speakers of Esan language, non native speakers of Esan language as parables in this work are translated to English in brackets and this work can also be a source of reference for linguistics researchers.
Data for the study was collected using oral interview, analysis was done using speech act theoretical framework.
