SUMMARY
This research has examined contemporary realities in AkwaekeEmezi’s The Death of Vivek.Oji and Uzodinma Iweala’s Speak no Evil. The first chapter introduces the study and sets the tone for the preoccupation of the research. It explores the background of the study, exploring the fact that contemporary society has evolved into a more receptive society with the advent of globalization and the advancements in technology. It examinesthe aim of the research, highlights the scope, significance and theoretical framework that underpins the research which are the sociological theory and the theory of globalization. The second chapter reviews related literature and discuses subjects like sociological theory, and an aspect of it which is the conflict theory. The conflict theory reveals that society is a composite whole where differing ideologies exist and there is bound to be conflicts based on a clash of interests, ideas and behaviour. This chapter also explores globalisation as a literary theory that undergirds the research. The third chapter begins the textual analysis and explores the contemporary reality of homosexuality in society, and the homophobia that is prevalent in Nigeria as a negative response to queer people and homosexuals. It examines the disadvantages of homophobia and its far reaching consequences. Jungle justice and gruesome acts of murder and dehumanization among others are notable heinous crimes that homophobia breeds as exemplified in both texts. The court.chapter explores the role of globalization AMD the rebellion of youths in the goal of ensuring that qwerr people are given a voice and treated with respect as human beings. This chapter explores tolerance and acceptance as the solution to homophobia. Drawing from excerpts from the text, it laments how homophobia has divided families and made queer 40 people live a life of constant escapism, secret, and insecurity. This fifth chapter concludes the essay. As contemporary society continues to evolve and as more youths muster the courage to express themselves freely and get comfortable with their sexuality, the desire for acceptance of every queer sexuality is on the increase. With the emergence of the LGBTQ community, most of these queer people are in a constant battle against law, religious and cultural teachings that still serve as an obstacle to their sexual freedom. This is because the law is against it and the culture of the protagonists in the novel against it too. The politics of identity which is the fight to assert ones sexual identity and move to be accepted, questions laws that are against homosexuals and also questions religious and cultural beliefs that hunt down gay people. This study suggests that tolerance, understanding and acceptance is a key factor in restoring stability and balance in societies that still lynch and treat homosexuals and queer people as animals. With the proliferation of popular culture further popularized by the media, the youths who are the first beneficiaries of technology and media access has come to embrace some of these popularized ways of life promoted everywhere. With these happenings, youths begin to imbibe these things promoted and begin to rebel against folk culture or norms and mores that has been set by society from antiquity. As media and popular culture contribute to shaping ones sexual identity, the youths begin to seek means to express themselves and their sexuality irrespective of how weird or queer it looks. The freedom of choice in our world today becomes very vital as every one begins to find means to exercise their freedom and be free to choose what he or she likes. In both novels, youth rebellion is seen as a major influence to sexual difference in the wake of the promotion of the LGBTQ community through different forms of media.
