ABSTRACT

The search and attainment of knowledge, which is a vital aspect of living, is more adequate when carried out under a suitable and conducive environment. A studio being the private workshop of an artist, and when it lacks the needed infrastructure and means of learning, could generally hinder creativity and artistic skill. Hence, there is a need for an adequate textile studio environment, which is the focus of this research. Over the years, there has been a higher increase in the population of students attached to the textile studio in the department of Fine and Applied Art, University of Benin, and the studio lacks equipment that are needed to contain the risen number of its users. It suffices to say that the construction of adequate and functional workstation for the textile studio will be more conducive to boost the zeal and the attitude of the students to work and increase their creative prowess and output.

Qualitative, analytical and historical approaches were employed in this research. A survey through the market was carried out in search for durable furniture materials and electrical appliances as well as the prices for each of the items. Participant observation and interviews, library sources and computer aided design of the studio furniture was done. This study premises on the production of a durable and functional workstation.

This study observed that the students in the textile studio preferred this new workstation with their own personal space and also sitting on chairs that are very comfortable and mobile. The present state of the textile studio in the Department of Fine and Applied Art, University of Benin, has been transformed and made appealing to achieve an enabling environment for students to learn and be more productive.
