ABSTRACT

Ceramics comprises of inorganic, non- metallic and solid materials obtained by heating and subsequent cooling. The heating procedure is what gives way to vitrification, and this is as a result of the preparation of the bricks, as at when is being mixed  with its components, sun-dried  and then fired to the point where it able to absorb high temperature that takes place from  the processes of firing i.e preheating, blasting ,and then continuous firing to a certain temperature and then after successfully fired it is cooled off before it is offloaded, this same steps are applicable to the wares to be fired and then off- loaded. After potters have successfully fired the wares we then place its value (cost) to be sold. So therefore this study is to expose to us the process of bricks making, after the materials have been sourced, the measurements of the bricks used to build the wall of the kiln, and the structure of the dual fuel firing kiln.

The use of kiln in the production of ceramic wares cannot be excluded; therefore striking a balance to the availability of its source of energy is a very important aspect to every potter. A successful firing is dependent on the building of a kiln. This project research adds to knowledge to the efficient kiln design principles that have been used by kiln builders  over the years and now to us hobbyist, practitioners and academic researchers employing accurate methods to building a kiln and it's study area. A few challenges propelled this research work, which includes: Lack of efficient use of timber for firing processes, also, the lack of reliance of electricity for power, and lastly, high cost of petrol.
