ABSTRACT

A Survey on the Constraints on the Practical Teaching and Learning of Genetics in Biology in Senior Secondary School, problems and possible solutions in Egor LGA, Edo State. The research was based on four (4) research questions that served as its guidelines, and it used a descriptive survey study design. It sought to find out what are the factors against the Practical Teaching and Learning of Genetics in Biology in Senior Secondary Schools, What are the Possible Solutions to the factors against the effective Teaching and Learning of Practical Genetics in Biology in Senior Secondary Schools, the materials needed for effective teaching and perceived impacts.

 The study employed a sample of Biology students and teachers in Egor LGA and a total of one hundred and sixty five (165) respondents amongst which 150 are students and 15 are teachers which were collected from eight private schools. The researcher-developed questionnaire titled: A Survey on the Constraints on the Practical Teaching and Learning of Genetics in Biology in Secondary Schools used as the data collection tool. There are twenty four (24) items on the questionnaire for students and twenty five (25) items on the questionnaire for teachers. To the response to the research questions descriptive statistics such as mean and frequency were used.

 The study found that when learning and teaching resources are provided in the classroom and laboratories, secondary school students are interested in learning. When teacher-student relationships are improved, student academic achievement is increased. It was suggested that students should be reoriented on the significance and value of practical genetics in biology. Both teachers and students should have access to laboratories   where they can go to practice their practical. The government should make an effort to hire qualified teachers who can instruct students on how to complete practical work in the laboratory.
