ABSTRACT

This essay analyzes the role parents have to play in the training of children, how their method of discipline and not the discipline itself, can play a major part in shaping their perception of themselves, how they act and how they relate to society through Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Purple Hibiscus and Rimma Onoseta's How You Grow Wings. it enlightens its readers on how this approach to child discipline can affect them deeply and in the process, do more harm than good. Also, throwing light on how it goes beyond them to affect the society at large. This study explores within the boundaries of the selected primary texts, the effects of extreme parental strictness on children Using the psychosocial theory derived from the psychology theory. The qualitative method of research has been used to examine closely, the consequences of extreme parental strictness as portrayed in the selected texts. It gives a detailed contextual understanding in the analysis of the literary texts. The family which is the smallest unit in the society, is laddled with the responsibility of creating a receptive environment for children in order to imbibe morals in them and teach them to become psychologically healthy, independent and functional members of the society as this will at large, foster growth and development. Failure to do so, will result in the opposite of the aforementioned as recognised through Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Purple Hibiscus and Rimma Onoseta's How You Grow Wings in this essay.
