ABSTRACT

This study explores conflict management in Nigeria, focusing on the role of civil society and the Nigeria Red Cross as a case study. Nigeria is plagued by conflicts, crises, violence, insurgencies, and various militant groups. Ethno-religious violence has been prevalent since the 1990s, and state violence has been frequent since the fourth Republic. Conflicts have also arisen over land, water, oil, and gas resources, and political conflicts, particularly electoral violence. Conflict is a general phenomenon and a way of life in most societies, including Nigeria. Policy in society is the extent to which conflicting interests and needs are constructively managed to prevent violence. Civil society organizations are working towards conflict management, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which has been invited by the Federal Government to assist the Nigerian Red Cross Society in managing, protecting, and assisting victims of war.
