ABSTRACT
Conflict in any organization may not enable the organization to achieve its set objective if not properly managed. Managers spend approximately twenty percent of their time dealing with conflict situations due to the growing complexity of organizations, uses of teams and group decision making. This is what drawn the attention of the researcher to investigate conflict management for effective performance in an organization (case study university of Benin non-teaching staff). The study adopted survey research design. The population in this research was 5150 staffs of university of Benin non-teaching staff from which 400 staffs were selected as the research samples using simple random sampling. The method of data analysis employed was simple percentage. The research findings revealed that misunderstanding in communication, breach of trust, difference in values, limited resources and structural factors are the causes of conflict in an organization. The findings also established that collaboration, compromise and avoidance are the method of conflict management used in an organization to manage or handle conflict. It also identifies collaboration as the best method of conflict management. The research recommends that the government should ensure that organization such as university of Benin non-teaching staff should be funded for availability of resources and suggested collaboration method of conflict management should be encouraged among organizations. It also recommends that proper communication procedures should be put in place to resolve conflict.
