SUMMARY

Boundary dispute had been the main cause of crisis in recent times. Thus, this research work examined the Utese-Egbeta land boundary conflict in the post post-colonial period. This study of Utese-Egbeta boundary disputes is primarily concerned with the effects of boundary disputes in intergroup relations in Africa. The result explicitly revealed that conflict usually have effect on the relationship between two groups.

Utese-Egbeta community before the boundary disputes that broke out in 2002 were so close that foreigners could not discern whether the two communities were separated. The communities lived as one, encouraged intermarriages, speak similar language, engage in inter-trade and adopted similar socio-political institutions. In fact, there were no physical boundary that separated the people apart from the fact that the two villages were conscious not to encroach on one another in the course of expansion. For example, the point where farmers meet when expanding became their new boundary. What existed among the two communities were more like psychological identity boundary; they were both conscious of the fact that despite their closeness, they remained separate entity with different government. It wasn’t until 2002 when struggle over ownership of the Reserve where there were large number of timber, that the individual identity of the communities became clear to the world. Each community asserted their uniqueness, claiming ownership of the borderland that house the resources.
