ABSTRACT

This project investigated how Eggshell powder can be used as a binding agent in the partial replacement of cement in concrete production. This is due to some of the Mechanical Properties Eggshell powder possess. This was predetermined by the numerous concrete tests that were carried out which included Consistency (Setting time of the concrete) test, Workability (Slump) test, Compressive test and Fineness of cement Test. Eggshell was gotten from the Food court of the University of Benin- UNIBEN, sun dried and grounded for the purpose of this research work. The practical experiment work was carried out at the Structural lab of the University of Benin, with a total of 54 concrete cubes of 100mm by 100mm by 100mm cast, with a water/cement ratio of 0.45, and a conventional mix ratio of 1:1.5:3. Partial replacements were undertaken at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 30% in order to ascertain the suitable required mass of Eggshell powder in percentage that will best be suitable to partially replace cement. The concrete cubes were allowed to cure and were tested over a period of 14, 21 and 28 days. From the practical procedures of the various tests to be carried out for this research work, this project is aimed at finding a suitable replacement for cement due to its mentioned disadvantages in modern day construction. The results of the experimental research are aimed at providing the best variation in percentage replacement Eggshell powder has on concrete production over curing period that is suitable for sustainable construction.
