ABSTRACT

The major objective of this work is to analyze the compound words in Edo language in order to know how this words are formed.

The framework of this research is built on the descriptive linguistic theory which dates back to Ferdinand De Saussure. This theory was used to evaluate the structure of compound words in Edo language.

The Edo language belongs to the kwa group of the Niger-Congo phylum and the major method of data collection were through interviews with different competent native speakers, observation and other relevant materials such as journals and books were used.

The Edo language has a very rich vocabulary and compounding has contributed to this development. This language has four major compound structures and others do exist. It is also observed that the Edo numerical system exhibit compounding and some phonological processes occur during compounding.

Lastly, this work sets out to give a descriptive analysis of Edo compounds and the procedures used for this work were very effective.
