ABSTRACT

This study assessed compliance to Coronavirus safety protocol among traders in Uselu Market, Egor Local Government Area. Three research questions and two hypotheses were formulated for the study. The population comprised of three thousand five hundred (3500) traders from which a sample of 360 was selected using Taro Yamme Formula. A cross sectional design was employed for the study. Data were collected using a self-designed questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test and ANOVA. A reliability coefficient of 0.84 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha statistics. Hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Results revealed low compliance (2.42 on a scale of 4), average knowledge (2.81 on a scale of 4) and factors such as perception of COVID not as serious as it is being reported (2.71) and difficulty in maintaining social distance due to the overcrowding nature of the market (2.89). There was no significant relationship between compliance and gender (p >0.05), there was a significant relationship between knowledge and level of education (p< 0.05). The study concluded that traders had low compliance to coronavirus safety protocol. The study therefore recommends that public health nursing practitioners should consider outreach and campaigns among traders and the Ministry of Health should consider policies aimed at ensuring strict compliance with Coronavirus safety protocols in market areas.
