ABSTRACT

This study investigated the competencies of fresh civil engineering and quantity surveying graduates, to determine the differences in the competencies of fresh civil engineering and quantity surveying graduates and evaluation of the ability of civil engineering competencies possessed by quantity surveying graduates. The method of analysis used are Mean Item Score, Mann Whitney U test, Relative importance index. A total of 394 companies were sampled using random sampling technique, using the Yamane Formula a total of 197 respondent was used. A total of 197 questionnaire were shared but 80 questionnaires was responded by the professionals in various companies. It was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS V.16). The results obtained from the analysis show that there is significant difference between a fresh civil engineer and a quantity surveyor using Mann Whitney U test, it was discovered that some competencies of civil engineers that quantity surveyors can’t perform. We observed that a majority quantity surveyors and civil engineers are competent enough in their job. There was a hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the competencies of fresh civil engineering and a quantity surveying graduates – the null hypothesis (H₀₎ and there is significant difference between fresh civil engineering and quantity surveying graduates – the alternative hypothesis (H₁). It was observed that a fresh Quantity surveyor are competent in civil engineering competencies areas like Administration and management, Preparing Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) as per structural drawings etc. There is a need for quantity surveying undergraduates to be taught some areas like Building Information Modeling (BIM).
