ABSTRACT

Yam (Dioscoreaspp) belongs to the family Dioscoreaceae that produce edible tubers. They are grown in many tropical locations, including West Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania. A study was carried out at a private farm in Benin City, to compare bag and conventional planting methods for yam production. Conventional yam production is the growing of yams in free draining loamy fertile soils after fallowing and clearing while bag cultivation of yam implies production of yams in sack bags in backyards rooftops and other convenient places in urban and rural settings. About 32% of the total cost of yam production was attributed to the bag method of yam production while 68% was ascribed to the conventional method of yam production In additions, measured growth variables did not differ significantlybetween the two planting methods. In conclusion, yam production is capital intensive but bag cultivation is certainly cheaper than conventional yam production. In terms of growth variables analyzed in the current study.
