ABSTRACT
Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by reversible airway obstruction resulting from inflammation of the lung's airways and a tightening of the muscles around them. It is usually caused by a complex environmental and genetic interaction. Solanum nigrum loca popularly known as black nightshade is a herb used in various parts of the world for the treatment of various ailments including asthma. The evaluation of the effect of solanum nigrum loca on the immune system of guinea pigs was carried out by sensitizing the guinea pigs, thereby inducing asthma, and then they were treated with the ethanol extract of solanum nigrum. There was an increase in the amount of white blood cells in the animals that were sensitized and treated with the extract when compared to the animals that were not sensitized, but there would be a decrease in the number of white blood cells in the sensitized and treated animals when compared to animals that were sensitized but not treated.
